Fernando Meirelles
Born on November 9, 1955, in São Paulo, Brazil, Fernando Meirelles developed an interest in filmmaking during his architecture studies at the University of São Paulo. Alongside friends, he produced experimental videos and formed the company Olhar Electrônico, gaining recognition in Brazilian film festivals.

Meirelles gained international acclaim with “City of God” (2002), which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director. Kátia Lund
Born in 1966 in São Paulo to American parents, Kátia Lund graduated magna cum laude from Brown University, where she developed an interest in filmmaking. She began her career as an assistant director on music videos, commercials, and films. Her work on Spike Lee’s music video for Michael Jackson’s “They Don’t Care About Us,” filmed in a Rio de Janeiro favela, inspired her to focus on stories from these communities.
Career Highlights
Lund co-directed “City of God” with Meirelles, bringing authenticity to the portrayal of life in Rio’s favelas. She also co-directed the short film “Golden Gate” (Palace II) and contributed to the television series “City of Men,” which expanded on themes from “City of God.”
