This reimagining moves Tomboy’s quiet, low-key coming-of-age story to a middle-class neighbourhood in Lagos, Nigeria, during a long dry-season school break. After a family move, a young teen who has always gone by Ifeoma introduces the new neighbourhood kids to ‘Femi’ instead — a name and persona that fits more easily than the one assigned at birth. The reimagining keeps the original’s tender, unhurried tone while raising the emotional stakes: Nigeria’s stronger religious and social expectations around gender make Femi’s summer freedom feel both more precious and more fragile, with extended family and church community adding pressure the original French suburb didn’t carry in the same way.
